Been doing mid-market M&A for a couple of months now (independent investment bank). Though I am quite grateful for the opportunity the WFH has made life a bit monotonous. It's a weird feeling working from 8 am to 12 am the next day with a few full days of weekend work. I was at another boutique before, deals were smaller mostly doing capital raising, but I had a much better work/life balance. Just wanted to know if moving from M&A to corporate banking would be an easy move? I am interested in debt and enjoy reading about the relationship management aspect of the job. How long do you guys think I should stick around at the current role? Any advice would be great, hope you guys are taking care.

Lol I know who you are because my friend asked me this question on your behalf the other night.

Corp Banking is nice but keep in mind unlike commercial banking you won’t have any relationship management until you’re basically a VP/Director (7 years+).

You also should expect worse exit opps and pay than what you’ll get long term in M&A. I would in your shoes consider a lateral to a better M&A shop and stick it out for a year or two then try private equity.

if you do decide you do want corp banking, then I’d say the most important element would be your story, i.e. outlining why you are leaving IB for CB and making it persuasive.
