A2A Lateralling
Curious about what the general process may look like for A2A laterals (under normal market circumstances). A few particular questions such as:
- Are A2A laterals preferable to MBA associates / would you have to do a year of senior analyst first?
- How 'upstream' can you go from a MM bank/boutique?

1) Yes / sometimes, depends on the bank [if they have a senior analyst program or not]. 2) Pretty far ‘upstream,’ though it’s easier and more common as an A2/3. Banks are always looking for good associates as MBA are expensive + green and most good analysts bail after their program.

I get that it's easier as A3 since it's not as common a position and banks can use it to try you out as a pre-associate, but why is it also easier/more common as an A2? I presumed there'd be less headcount as A2 since you're just filling for analysts who left early whereas banks hire fresh batches of associates.
I'm talking about Associate 2 and Associate 3.
