AM Director Compensation

Does anyone know what director-level compensation looks like in AM? Do senior AM staff (10+ years) frequently hit 500k or get significant carry if they’re around when a deal is closed and they’re staffed to it? I’ve read through the “What is your compensation in real estate finance” thread and there’s nothing for AM roles past senior associate.

Im with an office owner-operator that manages about 4B of opportunistic and core funds and I’m currently in a hybrid acq/am associate role that has leaned heavily towards AM since starting I started 6 months ago. I’m staffed to our opportunistic funds and the AM portion of my gig has been a great learning experience. I’ve enjoyed the work life balance that’s come with the role to the point that I’m now wondering if a career in AM is the way to go.

I’m in a high COL city. My GF, who I plan to marry, and I would like to buy a home and raise kids in this expensive city though, and I don’t want to be stuck financially down the road wishing I had chosen a more lucrative path.

The answer is "maybe"

Looks like both top out around $500k. I'd have to imagine those roles are few and far in between though.

The other thing that is impossible to predict is entrepreneurship. If you, and experienced asset manager, team up with a experienced finance person, and experienced development person, and an experienced construction person, and start a business that you collectively make successful - each owning 25% of it - then in theory your comp is limitless.
