Am I crazy?
Currently a Junior recruiting for roles in REPE roles in NYC. I interned at a couple RE places one of which being a top 15 REPE shop. Definitely think I'll be successful with recruiting but Part of me wants to say screw it, reach out to a small shop in NJ/PA/CT, intern there for the rest of college, then work there full time upon graduation. All goes well I'll be a MD by 30 at this place getting significant carry, have a lot of pride for what I've done, etc.,
Are these crazy thoughts? Because I believe I could end up in a spot out of college at a top shop that would be the result of all my grades, internships, and networking or I could take a smaller shop which would kind of throw away my past efforts
Small shops are great for experience as you can usually get exposed to a lot more of the areas of the business than you would in a large corporate company, but in the big firms there is usually a clear ladder of promotions and ways to advance in your role. with small shops it’s much harder to become a manager i would think since the managers are usually the people who started the company and when they look to hire other managers they come from the big firms. not sure if this is 100% true but just my assumption.
