Another One Bites the Dust π
Another junior finance professional committed suicide. Drew could have been your friend, colleague, brother, son, or just someone you made small talk with on the subway ride to work.
Let's skip the "this line of work will consume your life" and "you chose this path and knew what you're getting into" talk and get straight to the point - what are some actionable measures we can take to prevent people from taking such drastic steps. I'll go first:
- Let's de-stigmatize talking about mental health and well being at and outside of work. Being vulnerable with others about my insecurities made others feel like they can have open and candid conversations with me. I'd suggest others to do so as well.
Incredibly sad. I hope his family is able to find peace.
Seriously though, there is more to life than working in IB or PE. If you made it this far and don't like it, you can quit tomorrow, take 6+ months off, and companies will still get in line to hire you. I feel the espirit de corps aspect of finance is great, you're in the trenches with your peers, but you also get sucked into giving the company everything and feeling a loyalty that is completely one-sided, and can't get yourself to just leave. This career attracts strivers who will always aim for the stars, but you've got a long life ahead of you and there is nothing wrong with realizing you want a new path. Your job is never more important than your mental health.

I can't imagine what it's like seeing the aftermath of a suicide jump while walking somewhere. RIP, dude had a great smile.
Poor guy. Found his page on the firm, and then my mind immediately went to "oh wow, look, he broke in from a non-target and a MM firm", the industry certainly does things to us.
Just remember, no amount of money solves Mental health problems. Although the salary raises are good, they will never cure anything.

Iβm pretty sure OP has no idea why this kid jumped. It could have been work, but more likely was a girl, or family or a mental sickness.
I get that people like to make easy, generalized posts where others comment and agree and makes the OP feel good.
But this is sad man.
