Beijing Summer '17
Wanted to provide a quick update and make an inquiry amongst fellow monkeys.
I accepted an internship in Beijing for this summer. I will be working for an NGO that provides policy research/advising/discussion for finance ministers/central bankers of the G20. Chairmen of the organization include the likes of Paul Volker, Ban Ki-moon, and Christine Lagarde.
After graduation, I would like to land a job as an analyst in IBD. Coming from a nontarget I realize I will not get hired at GS or any of the BB. At this point, I would be grateful being offered the opportunity to work at a smaller bank.
On a higher note, I have added to the resume since my last post. This semester I've interned at a regional bank analyzing credits; nothing glamorous but it has been a great experience. I work as a bartender/waiter on the weekends, so getting more formal work experience on my resume is a relief. Now on to questions.
First, is anyone interning in Beijing this summer? If so, what will you be doing? Second, does anyone have any tips for networking while in Beijing? Obviously, I'll work the connections that I make with co-workers at the forum, but I want to leave China knowing that I did all I could to get my name out there. Third, I need recos for must see/do while in Beijing, preferably from those who have lived/worked in the city.
Thanks in advance. BTW, Kawhi Leonard is no doubt the most deserving of MVP, but that is just my Silver and Black bias.
Want to read, but too much condensed text.
Use paragraphs bro, next time.
It is very hard to give you any tips since you didn't mention your background, e.g. university/school/nationality/mandarin skills etc.
Background:
Seriously, I would not think about working in Beijing if I were you. At least not in investment banking.
None of the BB or Chinese securities firms will hire you. You have next to zero chance there given your background.
My advice would be try to get into Big Four transaction advisory or boutique firmsin the US and try to get a job in China later in your career. I know this has been done before. If you insist on working in China or Beijing now, maybe try some smaller English-speaking financial advisory firms... which is highly NOT recommended since it's way too speculative IMHO.
I appreciate the honest feedback.
Beijing IB? What about them hours? I've heard that they are worse than NYC IB hours, True?
