Being a Portfolio Manager at CB is Boring and the pay sucks. Are other PM roles the same?
I've pretty much worked as a PM the past two years. Looking back I thought it would be a great way to learn about a variety of industries and keep up to date with the economy while making decent cash. It's none of these things for me. I suspect its just the path I've taken but I'm honestly not sure. For reference, I've originated loans and managed a portfolio for the lower middle market clients.
The roles became more about learning the banks processes and procedures than actually learning about the clients and there wasn't enough managing of individual trouble makers. Everything was always routine and mundane. In the long run this wouldn't be an issue if I was being compensated appropriately for my time and had decent co-workers, but it seems that I still have the need to do a little more learning at this stage in my career and the pay sucks. I think the role might be a good fit when I'm older so long as the pay is good, but right now it's a real opportunity cost to learning other things.
I'm planning on going the MBA route and was thinking about whether it would be worth exploring PM roles in other types of environment. Does anyone else's experience in a PM role match up with mine?
