Being in the right fraternity at the right school
Right now I'm going to a big state school in the south (U of Texas, specifically). I'll be studying in the business honors program, but I'm looking to enjoy my time as well.
Right now I'm in the process of deciding which fraternity I will be joining. Currently, it looks like I'll be gunning for a spot at some of the top houses (KA, SAE, Sig Ep, Kappa Sig, probably not FIJI). Unfortunately, none of the alumni from my high school are in those fraternities and I'm kind of in an uphill battle because Texas does not have a rush week during which I can check out the houses. Can anyone who has been through the process offer some suggestions? I know I should contact rush chairs for summer events, but I'm asking for a little bit beyond that.
Also, there are many threads about being in fraternities and the connections they offer post-grad. I'm not really sure if the connections are meaningful for landing the really big gigs, but it is something I will be considering as I want to join a fraternity that can work/play hard and offer relationships that extend beyond graduation.
I should also mention that I plan on staying in the south (Houston & Dallas most likely).
Thoughts?
I'm an active in one of the chapters you listed. Simply put, we look for kids we would want to hang out with. Knowing no one and trying to get into these houses is difficult, so take the initiative.
While joining the right house on campus certainly makes a difference in terms of your social experience, I think each organization tends to have about the same value of network. This is especially the case nationally. Instead what you should be looking for is how you get along/fit with the guys. Be your genuine self and meet as many actives/brothers as you can. They will be making their evaluations collectively, not just based on rush chairs.
In short, don't be a try hard and have options (rush multiple frats). Even if you don't get into your top 5 you are fine. 9 times out of 10 people end up where they belong as the rush process is pretty thorough. Best of luck.
