Best Banks for Aerospace and Defense and Energy?

Which banks have the best aerospace and defense groups? Which have the best energry groups? I sort of think I might want to do corporate development in a couple of years and both industries interest me. So which banks have the best groups for those two industries? Thanks in advance for any help.

I've read a good deal about Quarterdeck, seems pretty interesting. Would a solid analyst from there be able to move into Aerospace and Defense PE afterwards? Or perhaps, what are some other banks with solid groups that could lead to that? Thanks for the help so far and in advance for further assistance.

Its possible to move into Aerospace/Defense PE, but very unlikely, unless you've worked at the top firms...names that spring to mind are the obvious candidates, but also Greenhill & Co, Lazard and MAYBE Gleacher (depending on how many deals they do)...I know that PE firms, from my own experience, look down on tier-2 and tier-3 firms, of which Jefco is an established member..

...wouldn't having solid experience with defense companies and working with them on IPOs and M&A be more valuable than someone who just did M&A? Maybe I'm being a bit naieve (sp?), anyone else have any thoughts on how to get into Aero & Defense PE?

I agree with the other guy, PE firms care more about the name of the firm you're from, rather than the exact nature of the work you did (within reason of course!)

Faced with two candidates:

  1. GPA 3.4, Harvard, Credit Suisse/Goldman/MS, Aerospace/Defense group, marginal transaction experience
  2. GPA 3.4, Harvard, Jefferies Quarterdeck, Loads of mid-market transaction experience

They will pick candidate 1 every time I'm afraid!

Thanks for the input. Quarterdeck looks really good on paper I guess, number 1 in M&A in Aero and Defense. And they seem to work with high profile clients (Lockheed Martin for instance). Oh well, thanks for the help, if anyone else has any input, perhaps someone who works in this kind of group, I'd love some more advice. Thanks in advance.
