Best Networking Alibis

Dear WSO community,

I am currently trying to maneuver into a related field, and the long days require networking to take place during office hours, as is the case with most finance jobs. I feel like I've played the "some undergrad from my alma mater wants to network" card so many times in the last two weeks, it's starting to get old. And I would like to keep the facade going.

So tell me, what are some of your favorite excuses to tell your boss when going to grab coffees with competitors?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't know about the specifics once your in the industry. However I get hour lunch breaks. 20 minutes to eat and 40 minutes to send e-mails/ LinkedIn messages. I also schedule any in person informational interviews I may have at a sushi restaurant on the ground floor of our building. That being said the central business district in N.O. is pretty small haha.

I see you are also a 2nd year associate.

The easiest way is to schedule any meetings or errands to coincide with when I need to go to a conference or presentation. I rarely stay through an entire presentation if I am not required to be there anyway.

If there are no events coming up then I try to schedule any meetings with investor relations, media, or corporate interviews around the same time as my personal calls and then leave early.

You should be trying to help build a book of contacts for your analyst to promote their coverage anyway. Ask for some more responsibility on that front and before you know it you'll be getting invited to all sorts of free lunches held by investor relations. You have no idea what you are missing if this is the case.

(If anyone from JP Morgan reads this I have enough umbrellas for one lifetime, thanks guys.)

When all else fails there is one foolproof way to get out.

Tell anyone who asks that you have explosive diarrhea and soon nobody will ask anymore questions.

Think about it.

When is the last time you asked about somebody's bowel movement?

I don't.
