I'm looking to get into project finance from public finance but I'm a little confused on the industry players. From the search function I'm of the understanding that Japanese/French/English banks dominate this space. If I'm wanting to look at those who structure and run the deal, should I be looking at bookrunner or mandated lead arranger on Bloomberg? For example, Rabobank shows up on lead arranger but not bookrunner. Are BBs worth applying to in this space or is it just better to wait for one of the former mentioned firms? If anyone had any insight or could PM me that would be great. Thanks!

i've worked in the project finance team of a big european bank. you should prioritise MLAs over bookrunners, but the exact role that banks play varies depending on the deal and who's behind it (e.g. big PE firms or, say, ports or construction firms). some banks will advise the deal as well as finance it, and would therefore play a role in structuring, but in many cases banks will act as a pure financier of the deal - these things are enormous, so no one has the appetite/balance sheet to do these deals by themselves. in the uk, lloyds/rbs are the leaders.
