Best way to go about getting an interview for an internship?
Hey guys I'm sorry this is going to be a little repetitive if you've answered my other questions but I'll explain. I've been reading different users talking about interviews for internships and I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I've called at least 40 places in Toronto so far and I've gotten little to no responses. I usually call the head office, ask if there are any internship opportunities and send my resume to a directed e-mail if there are. I've heard about doing information interviews but is that really the only path to take to get an internship interview?
Could my resume be the problem..? It is lacking any sort of financial experience and my GPA is currently only 3.00. I can provide more information or elaborate more if needed. Does anyone have advice on which route would get me an internship most efficiently?
PS: I'm applying all over Canada and the upper half of the USA. Is competition a lot more fierce in places like NY vs Toronto? Would it be harder for me as a Canadian to land an internship (or in the future a job) in NY as a Canadian vs an American born citizen?
The issue is that you're applying for internships in late May, when most would have been filled months ago...
And as you mentioned, it certainly won't help that you have no finance experience and a GPA of ~3. I've heard stories on here of people with better stats who applied to over a hundred places before landing the first internship, so 40 isn't actually that many....keep at it, and aim to get a Fall internship if you can't get a summer one (likely).
And if you need sponsorship to get a job in the US, then yes, much harder to get a job in the US than Canada.
Sorry, I just realized I won't able to intern in the states since I won't be able to get a working. But just a side question, is investment banking in Canada all that different from that in the US? Is there a more ideal place to work or do they both have their advantages/disadvantages?
I was also wondering about next summers internship programs since like you said this ones pretty much a no go (too late). But there are fall internships?? I'll get right on that..!
@"notthehospitalER" Where would I get finance experience this summer?? I have applied to be a sales representative at a bank, thought that would be a good idea but that's not finance related. To be honest I'm not even sure how I can get finance experience without prior finance experience?
I know my GPA is low at the moment...I kick myself for it everyday! I'm planning on retaking a lot of the courses I messed up on first year during my free time. I'll get my GPA to competitive level by graduation, maybe even a year before but it may be too late then. (3.5 - 3.7 is competitive level, right?)
What steps should I take to ensure a SA internship in either fall or next summer? I know that's an annoying question to answer but I just want some personal insight and general steps I can follow so i know I'm not going in the wrong direction about all this.
Should I continue to call different investment bank and hedge fund head offices as I've already been doing? Is this a good approach to take or is there a better method?
