if you know you are getting laid off... you should wait till it hits and collects severance.... while would you volunteer to quit and get nothing...
his pride

Pride isn't going to pay his bills.

Maybe I wasnt clear, this is in a situation whereby you are in the room with HR being told that they need to layoff. No way to predict if you would end up in the room. At that instance, is it better to offer to quit? This is from the perspective of job search post leaving the company?

Do you mean to say they are looking for 'volunteers' and will offer them severance?

If that's the case, you'd have to make your decision based on the severance package and how long you think it would take you to find new employment, versus getting fired, zero severance, but then apply for unemployment for up to 99 weeks.

If this is some sort of "you can't fire me because I quit!" thing, that's just dumb.
