Bloomy?
hi guys,
not sure how much of ibers usually use the bloomberg but i figured to take a shot in asking. i currently work for bloomberg in their brokerage sales division (recently promoted from spending about a year in their analyst position) and was wondering how often do you ibers use the bloomberg? im trying to get into ib hopefully at least as a 1st year associate after i complete my mba. i went to a non-target private college and will pretty much have 5 years experience in finance by the time i complete the mba (non-target grad school - univ of san francisco, or university of santa clara). what do you think my chances are of getting into ib? any info helps, thanks!
I'm in research and I use it all the time (I'm an SA)
sorry, whats a SA? im new to the board. research at an ibank?
i'd think it's good work experience. a well know company that we all use...on the trading floor everyone has the bloomberg app in their machine. i'm on it all day. i use the bloomberg messaging and chat easily as much as i use email.
thanks for the 2 cents!
any ibank interviewers here? any advice for someone with my background interested in getting into ib?
yeah, I use bloomberg a lot - it's always open - great for breaking news although the keyboard is the ugliest nastiest piece of shit ever.
The keyboard sucks, moving from the Bloomberg App to a regular keyboard always annoys me. But its incredibly useful. Pretty much everyone uses Bloomberg in the research department as a point of reference. They are probably more important to Traders which rely on news more than research (24 hour turn around on projects versus a few seconds).
btw - I'm a Summer Analyst (SA) which is an internship.
And also, can you get your people to change the interface back to how it used to be.
What were you guys thinking???
yeah, right - send in an help help
Everything about Bloomberg is subpar. counter-intuitive interface, horrible keyboard, etc. It's like something left over from the Fortran era. Didn't you guys add a history button / graph shading only 2 months ago? Have you ever tried to upload a portfolio through Excel? It's bad.
Don't get me started on the incompetence of theHELP>HELP people, and especially don't get me started on the appalling quality of the journalism.
Bloomberg's TOP / "feature" articles are about as sensationalist as the NYPost. Do you ever read an especially horrible piece of "journalism" and see the background of the author? Usually it's someone who spent 10 years at the Philadelphia Inquirer or the Podunk Express. I think high school newspapers have better writers. The stories / finance articles are absolutely embarrassing for anyone with any degree of financial or literary knowledge.
And the representatives who stop by are morons, too.
Sorry if this is harsh, but if I ever see a Bloomberg resume cross my desk, I will throw into the trash immediately. You're not learning anything; you're in back office's back office.
