Boutique Summer Internships
I intern at a healthcare consulting firm in NYC for Investment Banks, PE firms, and hedge funds. I'm very close to the managing partner of the firm I intern at and she is very connected to a lot of senior MD's at most BB's and boutique and would personally vouch for me which is helpful. She's encouraging me to apply to a lot of internships for summer 2019 and says that once I apply she'll send my application directly to her contacts there. I was looking at Jeffries, Guggenheim, MS, and maybe a few PE firms. Any tips on how to reach out to these firms and ask about internships? Some of them don't have sophomore internship programs
Jefferies*
Oops lol. Phone typo
Sophomore internships in IB will be tough. I'd recommend looking around at small boutique shops that maybe focus in the healthcare sector? or even equity research somewhere small in healthcare. Friends of mine who have done ER in their past internships are lights out in sector specific interviews. Healthcare IB Consulting -> Healthcare ER -> Healthcare IB would make sense. I doubt Jefferies will take a sophomore, Gugg discontinued their sophomore program, and MS is highly competitive and intended for diversity I believe.
The managing partner at my firm is an ex MD at a BB and is connected and knows a lot of senior MD's and would vouch for me. Also, I'm an African American male so that helps for diversity lol
GP Bullhound took me as a Sophomore intern last year in SF (they have an NYC presence as well) mainly TMT Focised dealds if you’re into that.
I looked them up and didn't see any internship opportunities for the summer in anywhere in the US. Did you get the internship through networking or an official way?
Unofficiall as hell....I’m by networking
I know it seems like getting a sophomore internship at a brand name is a great idea, but the facts are that it's extremely difficult to do (unless you are diversity) and it really isn't necessary. As long as you're a strong candidate otherwise, getting experience at an unknown boutique will set you up nicely. It's also your last summer to take it easy and relax in college.
Definitely still take a look at Citi's sophomore leadership program (as it isn't entirely diversity) and I believe JP does take a few non diversity sophomores in various groups.
If your contact is willing to reach out and send them a quick note first, maybe it could happen. Just cold emailing the MD's contacts even while mentioning his/her name is kinda tough.
@andrewmyles80" I wouldn't discount the power of a Sophomore internship. It sets you apart from the applicant crowd, and interview are so much more fluid because you don't have to sell yourself on "why IB" Not sure how hard it is to get into a Soph program as I really just wanted to do tech and a tech banking position literally fell in my lap as a Soph but I feel it really set me apart from the applicant crowd. Just my 2 cents.
