BP’s Trader Development Program

Hi all,

I have just been granted a first round interview for BP’s Trader Development Program through HireVue. I am from a state school and do not have much relevant experience in trading. I am wondering what I should expect and how I can prepare to distinguish myself against other applicants.

Thank you all very much!

I recommend learning the various refinery processes founds in a oil refinery and understand which process produces more or less of a certain refined product (refinery processes can be found on wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_refinery#Chemical_processes_found_in_…). I would read up on the upcoming IMO fuel oil spec change and understand the impact of the abundance of lighter sweet crude coming out of the gulf coast and how that has impacted the light ends market. Learn about backwardation and contango (there are other posts in this forum that explains this in great length).

I also recommend listening to Platts Commodities spotlight podcast and buying yourself a bloomberg news subscription (I think it is around £35/month). Bloomberg post some decent articles on energy every other day.
