Breaking into ER?

Hello,

I'm looking to break into the Investment Management industry soon here - specifically, ER. I'm one year removed from a non-target school, currently working as a Financial Analyst at a Fortune 50 tech company. I'm not happy with the mindless corporate finance ass kissing, and want to be more directly involved in the markets and investment process. Because of this, I'm studying for my CFA (L1 in June) and plan on seeing it through to completion. With the charter comes the work experience: 4 years directly managing or involved in the investment process. After my CFA, I plan on going to a full-time MBA program, most likely Ross or NYU, depending on where my SO's MD residency program takes us (It will be Midwest - Ann Arbor, or East Coast - NYC). That's a lot of background information, but please bear with me.

My questions -

  • Is there any chance of landing a gig in ER before my CFA/MBA completion? I am located in the Minneapolis/Twin Cities area. We have a strong boutique presence, and I'm on good terms with a number of professionals in the city (PJ, RBC, USBank).

  • What would be some "similar" roles I could embark on to 1) get my investment experience and 2) position myself to succeed by gaining experience directly in the industry prior to B-school. I would generally love to hear any stories of people that were in similar positions post-grad.

I would greatly appreciate any input or criticism on my internet resume/elevator pitch. I am also willing to connect on LinkedIn or meet in the cities for a cup of coffee/beer if anyone would want to entertain an information interview!

Thanks!
