Broker/Developer thinking about MSRE/MBA
Hi guys,
I will start with my background:
-Completed my BSc in Molecular Biology 9 years ago (GPA of 3.9). I did take some finance courses and did very well in them during my undergrad.
-I am currently 28 years old.
-From Vancouver in Canada.
-Originally I was interested in an academic career and it turned out to be the wrong path for me.
-I wanted to take time off before starting some random Masters degree and decided to start as a residential RE broker to join my dad's team.
-Eventually we got into developing upscale/luxury homes. (Annual Sales Revenue: $15-20 MM)
-Financially I have done well and enjoyed the entrepreneurial journey so far. However, now it has become simplistic and a little boring and the family business can now be handled without my involvement.
Reasons to pursue a MSRE:
-I am interested in a line of work that is more analytical and mentally intensive, particularly, in a RE development and management firm.
-I would like to get exposure to the larger US markets.
-Eventually I would like to return back to the family business and bring expertise that allows us to get into larger, more complex developments.
I understand I will take a financial hit to start my career at an entry level position, but I am willing to accept that. My family are fairly supportive and so is my fiance.
Am I viable candidate for any of the top programs MIT/Columbia/Cornell/USC? We don't have MSRE programs in Canada and only a handful of business schools offer specialization in RE.
What pitfalls or alternatives I should consider given my background and career goals. I know academically MSRE is better for what I am interested in, but MBAs are better at getting your foot in the door. Is there enough of a difference in the weight they carry among employers for me to consider an MBA over MSRE?
Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.
