This was Dartmouth's biggest selling point during their recruitment process for the undergraduate college, in that they have their "D" plan, which would allow students to be able to take part in a spring or fall internship at a BB.

HerSerendipity:
U.S. banks do, but usually it's for schools with weird schedules and there's a relationship with the university to allow for it.

What if there is no formal relationship or program set up between the university and the company for a semester long internship/co-op - do you think it's feasible for a student to approach the firm directly and try to set up himself, and THEN have it approved by the university? I know that getting it approved by the university isn't a problem, I was just concerned as to whether the company would be open to potentially going through with the proces.

i would imagine it'd be quite difficult. As mentioned by CNI, Dartmouth has a very structured program which pretty much mimics the summer analyst program. I actually think they offer internships all year around to Dartmouth students. Apparently schools like Columbia and NYU Stern also have some 'partnerships' with banks that allow you to work part-time.

Haven't heard much of random kids showing up when not part of those programs, but you can always inquire.

If you're school is in the NY area, the impression HR gave me was that you can get a part-time internship, it's just that you have to reach out on your own, and your school won't be a "recruiting target" for a school-year internship unless it's Columbia or NYU. Merrill Lynch definitely has this program, and tho not a "BB" so does McKinsey.
