Not trying to be funny. Say you get a text saying they need you at work in an hour but you thought you woudn't be needed tonight so you went out and had some drinks, enough where you couldn't do your work. Does this happen? I know many med residents can't drink during certain times.

i think it actually happens freq. i worked sat and some intern got called in when i was leaving about 2.30am..dude was obviously drunk but his blackberry wasn't.
getting drunk as an intern sounds pretty retarded. i'd at least wait till i had a FT offer

I was recently called on Saturday (day before yesterday) at 7 pm a few hours after a road show while totally hammered.
Luckily, I didn't answer it, and got an e-mail too which I replied to the following morning.
Then again, I'm in ER, which is not even close to comparable to what is expected of I-bankers.

I say yes - my group regularly goes out (yes, after spending 100+ hour weeks together). Plus we have an ex bar manager in our group now who's totally plugged in.
i have a mini fridge in my cube always filled to the brim with beer... after 5, toss back a couple, time goes faster.

your always on call, but you do/can go out and have a good time - generally, the work can wait till the next day if its like saturday at 10PM - ull just do it hungover in the morning
i do recall an instance my first week of work when i went to a baseball game with a SMD, wound up getting tanked and was called back into the office to finish a pitchbook...ahh those were the times..
Okay, so I just got the biggest project I have ever had to do. It is probably going to result in me pulling 3-4 all nighters as the deadline for it is Friday. On the good side of this- I am working from home, and yes, I am drinking Johnnie Walker as a I type this. Yes you can get drunk, it just depends on how functional you want to be the next day. I think I'll just close my eyes for a couple of seconds ......

if you get called back in on a sat night only analysts and associates will be around and if you come back drunk they will think its hilarious
make wise decisions on and off the desk. you know that you are technically "on call" on weekends...have fun but i think you should keep in mind that you make be called it. however, the comment about MDs not being on the desk on weekends is pretty accurate.
If you aren't getting drunk on the weekends you are not building the social relationships that are an important part of the job!
Getting drunk on weekends numbs the pain and lets you blow off some steam.
great advice so far, and i think this has been touched upon, but don't you think the biggest piece is the group culture? i know that in some of the groups in my bank drunkenness at a certain hour is an expectation whereas in others it is not...

You can also sneak out on tuesdays or wednesdaynights and come in very hungover the next morning. When asked, pretend you have a new girlfriend or you're trying to raise kids or somethings, which totally fucks up your sleeping pattern.
@ sleepyguyb: Dude, as much as we like to think that the world began and will end with i-banking, it isn't that big a deal - it's still just a job. A good job, but a jobe nonetheless. Unlike a med resident, you crunch numbers and play with powerpoint, so if you're drunk, you get a number wrong or let a couple of typos slip - worst case scenario, someone will spot them in front of the client - it will probably win your MD brownie points, as by slacking you off in front of the client, he will remember the days when he was an analyst and screwed up in just the same way.
