Chances of getting into a B-School
I am going to be joining (formerly ABN AMRO) RBS's M&A division in September as an analyst.
I interned at Lehman before this and had an offer but the suckers went bust.
I am wondering how much impact does the reputation of your employer have on your b-school application, (I am aiming to go to a b-school in US) 3-4 years from now, especially as RBS is not regarded in same league as US BBs.
What did you do at Lehman?
I was a summer intern within their IBD division
Your primary concern should be differentiating yourself from other finance types. While your employer brand name is very important there is only a marginal difference between the various BBs from a bschool Adcomms perspective. While GS>RBS you will generally be viewed as a "banker" and judged based on your other stats, GMATs, GPA, ECs, leadership exp/potential etc relative to your peer banker group. Make sure that over the next few years you get involved in something that you are passionate about outside of banking. For example, I played a college sport, coached and mentored in college in my community and have continued to coach, lecture etc since graduation. I also developed a small non-profit org designed to collect old sporting equipment and clothing...
Being more than just a resume is key
Out of curiosity, why did you take RBS over the Barclays offer? Or were you not in the U.S. which would make sense then.
Well,
I am based in London and Nomura took over Lehman here and they came back too late with their decision to honour the offer by which time I had already accepted another one
What you do matters more than who you do it for. Junkbondswap made good points. They key to a successful application from a work experience perspective is communicating the impact that you had, which speaks to your leadership potential. In fact your application could be more interesting if in fact you get more responsibility by being at a smaller shop. I ended up at Stanford after working at a small strategy consulting firm that few people outside of L.A. had heard of, but I had great responsibility and great access to the senior people of that firm.
Here are some other good advice you might want to keep in mind as you build your story for business school
