Recently, I've been browsing the WSO forums looking for advice on cold e-mailing. So far I have found a lot of contradicting advice. Some people suggest (and this is what I have just started doing) doing a short, brief e-mail that is to the point. The less is more tactic. Other people seem to totally disagree with this saying that the e-mail needs to be more personal and that EVERYONE cold e-mailing essentially sends the same thing and they don't stand out.
What do you guys think?
And more specifically, what do you think of the cold e-mail template I have been using so far? I have been using it to send to MD's, VP's, and other higher up positions at firms that have a job opening that I just applied for. I also attach a copy of my resume and cover letter for the position. Currently applying for an analyst position in RE acquisitions, investments, or development in NYC.
Dear [Person's Name]
I saw [firm’s name] job opening for the [position name] and just applied. I believe my experience, along with my career aspirations, fit the position's requirements very well. It would be a pleasure to be given the chance to further discuss the opportunity with you or another person involved with [the position's job specific job function] at [firm's name].

[My Name]
Here are some suggestions, I never use Dear in the US it is too formal, Hi usually works much better. I think the most important thing is to not ask for a job. Say that you are exploring new career opportunities and would like to ask them some questions and get some advice and that you would like to meet with them for 20 minutes when it is convenient for them. Don't send your resume across in the initial email.
There is a book by Steve Dalton called The 2- Hour Job Search, it is pretty good in terms of how to approach people with cold emails.
To me, that comes off too strongly as begging for a job. I usually do something more along the lines of Hi, [state something you have in common-i.e. alum of same school, really interested in learning more about their group], ask if they have time for coffee chat. I would then bring up I applied when we meet.
