Computer Science Minor, Math Minor or Econ. Minor (With certain caveats)
Hey everyone,
I am going to have to declare my minors quite soon, and was wondering if you could give me your thoughts really quickly. Quick background about me: Finance major, passion for value investing, tech & Fintech. Previously passionate in real estate, and valuation of RE.
I attend a Uni. where I am mandated to take a liberal arts core, so it makes it difficult for me to minor in certain classes (Computer science specifically.) However, with a math and econ minor I can easily finish on time.
With Computer Science I won't be able to complete it by graduation. I can make it up by "overloading" (Taking an extra class form the norm), or in the summer. Unfortunately my school doesn't offer winter classes. This is problematic b/c I don't want to give up any summer internships just to make up classes.
I love math, but I forgot Calc II since HS. Fortunately I can take mathematics for finance/Financial Engineering/Programming etc. However, a lot of these courses require some knowledge of linear algebra/Calc. etc. I won't have time to re-learn them due to the fact that I will be interning over the summer, etc.
Econ. is kind of useless imo. b/c I can read a couple of books, and I have already grasped the basic concepts of econ.
I personally want to do Computer Science for a couple of reasons: I love creating things, I want to use my knowledge to create a blockchain with my friends, etc.
Thoughts?
Have you considered taking an extra year? If not, I would focus on your main major but include some math/computer science classes so at least you have some extra bullet points on your resume/CV.
I would advise against overloading, you want to keep and maintain a competitive GPA. If you are unable to focus on your major classes, I would advised against the minor altogether.
Yes I have thought about considering an extra year, but I would rather not take an extra year. Technically I would just need to take another semester, but I still don't think if it would be worth delaying my future internships over (Maybe it is worth it, I'll plan it out)
For a math minor: The most reasonable path for me are general math classes (Multi/Linear Algebra/Differentials-> Then I can take financial engineering/Programming Courses.) I can even graduate on time.
Also if I ever want to switch over to other fields of finance, I will be well prepared.
I believe that everyone should have an engineering minor, at the very least, so really at the end of the day, I don't want to end up with an econ. minor.
