Convert short position when stock price rise

Hi all! Trying to find an answer to whether a short position, in practice, needs to be covered? Or is it possible to convert your short position in some way, with the use of derivatives etc?
I've come across answers suggesting that you can, with the use of put options, offset your short position but this does not really make any sense to me. Would be super grateful if anyone could take his/her time to provide some clarity.
