Corporate Banking internship for Sophomore Year
Hi, first of all.. sorry if any of what i say sounds stupid, kinda new here.
Anyways, I am a sophomroe currently aiming at an IBD/S&T SA next year and is offered a Corporate banking summer intern position at a top bank. I kind of got this position through connections and I am not sure how structured the program and all will be (still trying to find out). So I am wondering if anyone know more details to corporate banking and how 'good' this experience is in getting an SA next year.
And if i also get an offer for an Operations intern(a structured program) at another BB, how would the two compare? (I am assuming the banking one definitely owns operations even if its not a structured program?)
Thanks in advance.
If you want to work in IBD/S&T next year, operations is a dead end road. You absolutely do not want to go into operations if you want to get into banking at least.
I think as a sophomore doing corporate banking at a bb is a good experience and you should be able to leverage this experience into something more next year.
I agree with masterg. Ops is a dead end if you want to be a Banker. When you recruit next year, the banks are going to look for experience that directly relates to what their Analysts do, so I vote for the Corporate Banking gig.
Look, Ops takes plenty of heat on these boards, but for a sophomore it's a great experience. Coming into Junior SA interviews, banks would love to see any previous summer internship whether its ops, commercial banking, acctg, or internal finance. Claming that 'Ops is a dead-end road' simply isn't true for a sophomore internship. Plenty of ppl on this board and in the industry did ops internships as sophomores and it sets you up perfectly for junior SA positions. Commercial banking > Ops, but either's a great opportunity for a sophomore.
Agree with nystateofmind. In the past few days, I've come across a lot more anti-ops posts than usual (but then I've only been checking this site for a couple of weeks).
That said, corporate banking is indeed better than ops.
I would advise you to go for it since you say it's at a top bank... unless of course you find something better at a boutique or HF or something.
hm.. thanks a lot guys, i guess i will go for the corp bank role. I guess kinda had a small 'attachment' to the ops thing cuz tht was the only thing i got by myself. But seems like corp bank will def be a better experience! And yeh, for me, i will def die for an ops intern if it wasnt for my connections helping me :)
Sorry to bring this up again, but just want to confirm that an experience to shadow the relationship manager and basically to just work in the corporate banking division (not structured program but will last 8 weeks)at a BB will be better than an ops summer intern program at a top european bank yeh?
Yep. If it's an unstructured program try to really impress them in the beginning, that way you will get to touch the ball a lot more during those 8 weeks. Best of luck.

An finance related internship is better than no internship. Just try for an IBD internship next summer. You're a first year student, just relax.
