COVID IMPACT ON GMAT FOR MBA

Northwestern Kellogg announced today that it would not require GMATs for this upcoming class due to COVID-19.
Do you guys think other schools will do the same? Focusing on H/W/S
I know there will also be an at-home GMAT available in a week..

I can't really see why they did this now that the GMAT can be taken at home? It lets schools pad their classes if they are worried about that, but hard to imagine a scenario where HSW would do the same. While surely imperfect, the GMAT is the only standardized barometer of intellectual horsepower that schools have, it would be tough to lose it.

For those recruiting banking/consulting you'll still need a GMAT to apply for those jobs.

at home GMATs will surely have a ton of cheating though no?

That was the first thing I thought of, but I imagine they have figured out some sort of security.

Also, it's not like a book test, there isn't a way to look up answers you just have to solve and answer quickly, so the only realistic way to cheat would be have somebody who has been studying for it take it in your place. Curious to learn what the mechanisms for preventing that are.

A few random thoughts here. I presume Kellogg has waived the standardized test requirement simply to encourage individuals to apply. Kellogg isn’t going to let under qualified individuals matriculate. In waiving test scores, they’ll have a large pool of applicants to assess. I’m sure their admission committee is capable of finding strong candidates regardless of GMAT score. Do you really need a test score to spot the applicant who spent four years in consulting, has an engineering undergraduate degree, and has extensive extracurricular involvement?

With respect to remote test taking, the GMAT is not an exam that can be gamed in cheating. Even if you were able to cheat, you’d surely be wasting precious time. Additionally, the GMAC will surely require that remote test takers download software for the duration of the exam while leaving one’s camera on. This software has the capability of recording key strokes and mouse clicks, displaying the test taker’s screen, and even recording the test taker by way of the external computer camera. All of this could be recorded, monitored, and re-reviewed by testing authorities. Seems as if there would be plenty of ways to get caught cheating thus ruining all kinds of career advancing opportunities that require a standardized test score.

Again. Just my thoughts on the matters discussed above.

FYI - in addition to the above info, the online GMAT is a shit show. You’re not allowed to use scratch paper or a whiteboard, you have to use a virtual whiteboard (huge handicap for quant problems). there are no score cancellations and no breaks between sections.

As someone who has been studying, I will be waiting to take it in person, and I suggest others write to GMAC to voice concerns about the online test. it’s idiotic and not at all equivalent to testing in person
