Not really. Pretty impossible to hide it from your group unless you’re at some no-name bank right now where the employees dont have any friends at the major banks you’re applying to. Not sure how much of an concern this is though. People at my SA EB knew I was recruiting FT and I still got a return. Was never a problem, and they even connected me with their contacts at other banks.
Also, if you don’t include your resume or where you’re interning, good luck getting someone on the phone with you.
When would you begin networking then? As I'd think that you want to offer in hand before turning down the return offer, so in that case, do you have to network and interview during your SA stint?
Never heard of FT IB interviews happening during the summer. Pretty common for MF PE, but for IB they usually also have to wait to see their own retention.
As for when to network, really depends. I would contact friends/close contacts early so you are aware of the processes, and then reach out to other alumni towards the end of your SA stint
Thanks for your answer! Just another question - if the interviews happen after the internships, isn't it risky as your offer's deadline could pass? I'm an incoming SA for 2022 so just trying to figure out what to do as I would likely want to recruit for FT too.
Sometimes, but usually the interviews happen within 2 weeks after the internship. You can also accelerate processes or ask for deadline extensions. Pretty common to decline the early sign on bonus though
Don't shit yourself. Whatever company you're going to intern at doesn't really give a shit about you as a person, so do what you have to do. I recommend you keep in touch with your contacts at banks that you're interested in for full time, but don't necessarily mention that you're interested in FT recruiting. Just build a rapport with them under the guise that you're interested in the coverage or product group they work in, and back that up. When it comes to it next summer, you can mention how you feel you may be a better fit at their firm then ask them about FT recruiting NEXT SUMMER.
