Do I get a second chance?

Last year, as a junior at a target school, I already had an undergraduate research grant lined up for the summer when a few of my friends suggested I apply for some consulting summer internships. I applied at the last minute and did first round interviews at Mck, Bain, BCG. I didn't prepare at all, and they did not go well.

After doing my own research project I realize that academia is not for me. I've gotten much more serious about full time recruiting, have been preparing, practicing cases, etc.. Will they hold my failure against me when I apply start applying this fall?

At least at banks, it will hurt you a little bit. That being said, if you are granted an interview, then you're on an even playing field. The firms just have to decide whether it's worth taking their time to interview somebody that didn't make it past the first round last time. At least at my bank, we keep pretty thorough candidate records, so we know who has and hasn't performed well in intern interviews.

Prob will hurt you at McK more than others; I know they are more meticulous in tracking peoples' interactions with the firm and how their interviews/tests (for foreign offices) went.

If you did particularly well for McK with a foreign office, (passed PST, passed final rounds) but they did not have a spot at the time, will that help you get / give you a bonus for a future interview?
