Does proximity of your b-school to consulting firms help for recruiting?
If I want to join a consulting firm at the post-MBA level in California, would it be more beneficial to attend a top 7 MBA program on the east coast, or to attend a respected but less prestigious school such as UCLA or USC? I think I have a good shot at getting accepted at some top 7 schools, but Stanford is probably out of my reach... so I can go to a top program but it would be far from the geographic area I want to work in.
What about Haas?
I'd get in there no problem. But not as interested in going there.. Berkeley depresses me.
Most consulting recruiting seems regional to some extent. Try to talk with current students or recent hires to get a feel for the office quota.
You should definitely go with the best school you can and then apply to the office you want, regardless of region. You'll need to spend some time thinking about your story and why you're not looking to stay regional, but generally office choice isn't that big of a deal.
Recruiting is regional in the sense that if you're applying from Kellogg then the recruiting team is mostly going to be out of the Chicago office. While you will deal with them in cultivation and the first round, they'll send you out West for the serious stuff.
