Women in Finance - Bullying Misogny

bullying and misogyny. Is this something you have dealt with at some point your career and how did you overcome it?I feel like with some of the senior guys once they realise they are not going to get anywhere with you they become misogynistic and say abusive derogatory things ( blatantly or subtly)about you. Really offensive stuff that is personal in nature. I know it is about being resilient and tough but I would come home shaking and burst into tears. This lockdown I have been driving myself crazy replaying each incident again and again. I think that any woman in the industry is a survivor who has defeated all this bs to earn respect of her colleagues and I would appreciate any guidance you could give. Thanks.

hi. thx for response. I haven’t approached him no because I am scared of being the stick in the mud and there is a lot of banter amongst the guys. I don’t mind that I just find it intimidating when it is personal in nature against me. eg if I have my head down getting on with things one of the senior guys was like ‘today I’m just going to be a mad gorilla and break all those ceilings above me’ while he kept looking at me witha smirk on his face and his stupid pals sniggering.

Hey late to this, I'm a lady... when I deal with those semi-douchey guys in the workplace that joke around a lot making slights at me I hand it back to them in sarcasm, not in a cunning way because you don't want them to know it rattles you because they'll keep doing it but try to make it into a joke back on them where the other guys would laugh at him. So a response to that could be a deadpan of like 'too bad you can't because you can barely lift' - some shit like that. Obvs don't do it all the time but just dish it right back to them all in a good fun sense. Overtime you'll get them on your side; at least that's what has happened me and how I was able to respond to their jerkiness.

Everyone goes through all sorts of shit in this industry and it's not just women. Maybe the lockdown is just making you depressed, anxious etc. - I feel the same way when I am indoors all day, then I go for a run and all those voices and thoughts in your head that make you feel like shit disappear.

If this is a serious topic (sometimes it is hard to to tell if someone is trolling or not), it should not receive MS. I am going to assume that you do not work in the US due to the way you spelled the word realize. I think the treatment you would receive as a female would depend partly on the area of finance. I would think there would be a big difference in attitudes towards women on a trading desk compared to in asset management.

Good words. How one treats others is super important. I am not religious but I think the phrase, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," is a good way to approach life and specifically, your interactions with other people.

" any woman in the industry is a survivor"

that is one defeatist attitude. stop victimizing yourself.

sucks but part of entrenched misogyny in all industries. unless overt or threatening, i recommend you send an email and alert someone in hr and get it on record, also, keep a journal and log all such events in as much detail as possible. however, as a sign of strength in the workplace, i'd generally ignore the person, and speak openly about the specific person who made such comments and persons who failed to stand up in your defense without being a sjw. casually and openly state how disturbing and inappropriate they were to make such comments. i would recommend not playing the victim and, in turn, show strength and resilience in your ability to rise above and subtly shame them at every chance. hope this helps someone.

this is probably a troll post but you never know who might stumble upon the thread. namaste.
