Dress at MBB

I am interning at MBB this summer.  Although I assume it will likely be virtual, I would like some input on what consultants where to work if it were to be in person.

What type of clothes/how formal attire do you wear (I am a male)? Are there any affordable brands you would reccomend? Nobody in my family (parents, brothers, grandparents) has had a corporate job before, so I am new to this!

What makes you think internships might be virtual this summer?

I interned at MBB last summer. Basically it’s super team dependent- depends how relaxed your project leader/engagement manager is, and also the client itself. Wear a button up on the first day of training I’d say (or the female equivalent). If it’s on zoom it’s easy to see what everyone else is doing and change if needed, but for us, most guys wore a button up to training. Once you join your team, just ask your immediate supervisor what the team’s dress code is and they’ll fill you in. Every team has different standards in terms of what’s expected, when they start work, when they end work, etc. It never hurts to ask about these team norms early on so that you conform to them. Best of luck this summer! DM me if you want.

Patagonia vests.

Seriously though, play it safe with a business casual dress shirt for zoom, and see what the team's wearing.

The general rule of thumb at my last shop was wearing casual or business casual for general stuff and then step it up to full formal for client interactions.

Might vary with which MBB you're at but at the one I was at this summer, it was completely casual on zoom. Tshirts/hoodies every day.

edit - just realized you asked for in person. During the times I visited the office last year, it was all dress shirts and decent pants but nothing super formal like suit jackets and ties.

I also interned at MBB last summer and it was super casual on Zoom. Granted, I was on a PE retainer team so never really had true "client facing" meetings. For the meetings with the PE firms, only the senior manager and up had their cameras on and they were dressed in business casual attire for the occasion. Otherwise people would literally show up in workout attire for our daily meetings. I tended towards casual but not as casual as athleisure.
