EDHEC or SSE

Hi guys,

I have been admitted to two MSc.

EDHEC (Nice, FRA) MiM Financial Economics
SSE (Stockholm, SWE) Master in Accounting and Financial Management

Pros/Cons:

EDHEC:
I have a 30% scholarship (highest possible)
3 year programme with 2x6 months mandatory internships included
Double degree - MiM and MSc in Finance
Ranked no1 MSc Finance at financial times 2017
Courses seems to be alot more fun than those at SSE

SSE
No tuition fee
2 year programme
Expensive housing etc
Ranked higher than EDHEC for getting a job in IB according to efinancialcareers

I am from Sweden and I would like to work in IB/Markets, preferably outside Sweden for a couple of years before moving back to start a family etc.
Furthermore, I am NOT fluent in French so Im guessing I cant work in Paris etc after graduation but rather London or any other English speaking city/country.

What would yo do if you were in my shoes?
Is EDHEC as well-known as SSE for getting a IB/Markets job in London for example?

I haven't looked at placement stats of the two programs but, based exclusively on logic, I'd go to SSE if I were you. You would have easier access to internships, amazing exchange programs overseas and lower overall costs.

EDHEC is nowhere near HEC, and is probably below ESCP and ESSEC too, I am afraid. Given that you do not speak French, it makes little sense to study there.

Finally, I don't think EDHEC would add anything to your chances of landing London IB compared to what you could obtain with SSE on your resume.

From what I know about these programs which is not much, I know for a fact that EU citizen don't have to pay at SSE. So, I cannot see why you would not go there.

I would go for EDHEC. First of all, it ranks better on the FT ranking than the SSE (I know these rankings are not perfect but..). Secondly, french business schools have excellent teaching methods with a strong emphasis put on soft skills that are paramount in order to stand out in the labour market. In addition, though swedish are not openly racist, they do not mix with foreigners a lot, so, unless you come from another nordic country (other than finland) I would think twice before moving to sweden. Finally, the SSE might be free, but life in Sweden is outrageously expensive compared to France, and from a DCF perspective, both masters offer a positive a NPV.

I've met people from both schools. Bottomline: SSE>EDHEC. EDHEC might be a decent school for asset management type roles but comes nowhere close to SSE for IBD recruiting, You'll find decent amount of people going to everything from Goldman to Greenhill London from SSE, while EDHEC manages as well but it's no where close to SSE. SSE is also far more competitive to get into. Scandinavians are racist when it comes to hiring people but they are the most chilled out and nicest people I've met. Regarding EDHEC, people will tell about it's reputation in finance but still fails to compete against top 3 french school even in domestic finance market. In France, school brand>>>grades. even if you are top student at EDHEC you may fair worse than below average student at ESCP. so unless you speak french I wouldn't even try to compare the two.
