Trying to network with alums from my school. I was wondering: what circumstances would sending the email to the MD or VP, say, do more harm than good? If I do screw up, Would the MD even remember me later on when I go apply or would it just be another annoyance in the sea of othe emails he’ll forget about in a couple of years?

That's not true. You can cold-email anyone and on average, it will do more good than harm. There may be certain circumstances like a strict contact system for Ivies, but anywhere else that doesn't apply.
That being said, what do you mean "if I do screw up"? Just don't screw up. Talk to older friends and people who have gone through the process before.
I would also disagree with above, I'm not familiar with a strict no contact rule; however, the only reason I got my SA offer was through a MD connection.
Most MDs in my experience were more accepting of cold emails than analysts. When I was reaching out, the analysts are used to the typical 20-30 minute networking dance with a referral ask at the end. Contrasting that, I've had good phone calls with MDs that lasted anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour at the longest.
As to your "if I screw up" point, as long as you don't make awkward pauses on the phone during the conversation, you should be decently fine. The second you run out of questions with a MD make your referral ask and get off the phone, these guys/gals are busy don't do the same dance that you would with analysts/associates.
VP is the sweet spot for networking
If you email an MD make sure you end with 'thanks bawse' and a quote from mr. Buffet. also, if you do so via linkedin, endorse their excel skills too.. never fails
