ER vs TAS

Trying to figure some things out for the long term and would like others input.

Currently in ER (Im a CPA), wondering if it would be smart to try and get into TAS at the Big 4.

I see it mainly as two paths:

(1) stay in ER, most likely start studying for the CFA
(2) get into TAS (hopefully M&A), see where it leads within the firm, try to pivot to banking.

Does anyone have insight into long term salary at both places (Big 4 partner vs Equity Analyst).

Why the hell would you need to go to TAS from ER to pivot to banking? Long-term comp in ER is better than TAS. Buyside exit opps are better from ER (needless to say). Only advantage I see for TAS is likely better hours and a potential to go to PE... but if that's the case why not just go ER -> banking -> PE? I am a bit confused at your thought process.

Bro organizational structure is flatter in ER... there is a much more visible path to ER analyst vs. TAS partner. Regardless, exit opps are better - including to banking. If you want to get banking (as you said in your initial post) then try and lateral directly there. No real conceivable reason for a TAS stint in between.

You can definitely go into banking from ER. I've seen it happen many times and some firms with internal mobility programs encourage it. IMO, TAS is a step back from your current seat. If you're fine with staying in your current industry focus, the transition should be even easier. Does your ER team do banking-related work? I know some tech teams do and that's a great way to develop the relationship.
