Evaluating Fit

I had a final round for a small distressed debt internship (only 1 spot), and they said they wanted to bring me in for a set of final round interviews, primarily evaluating "your fit with the company"

So basically they bring me in and they make me wait in the interview room, for what must have been an hour. Then they bring in each of the guys one by one, and we're basically just talking about my background, what I'm interested in etc.

I thought it was pretty standard, can't see any reason why it went wrong, but I never got the offer. I called up the main analyst who I'd be working under, and he said that I was an excellent candidate and thought I was bright but there was just someone better.

I then see an opening for the same intern position posted a couple days later, and I told one of my friends to apply just to see what was going on. He was told the spot is still open.

What went wrong here? I am totally confused ... did I smell bad? Or was the whole waiting thing part of the interview (to see what I would do)?

They just didn't get the right fit from any of the candidates. I am sure what the analyst said was true, about you being a qualified candidate since you made it to the final round, it is just that they were looking for someone else. The analyst was being nice (I would have done the same thing).

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

Fit comes down to the airport test (mostly). Are you someone they'd want to be stuck in an airport with? Apparently not. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you, or something "went wrong", just that they didn't see you as their type.

It was shady that they said there was someone better, only to relist the position. I would have just told you straight up.
