Facebook friend request from previous manager...
I still keep in touch with my old VP, who's in his early 30s. We were chatting over the phone the other day about markets and then he says he wants to show me vacation photos on FB... then adds me.
I like to separate work from my social life... not too big on adding people I don't hang out with, and I have some pics on my profile not too fond of sharing with people I know professionally. Should I just accept his request out of courtesy, or pretend to forget about it...
Thanks
Personal choice man. I am very close with my VP's and am already facebook friends with them.
You shouldn't have any pics on FB, or preferably anywhere online, that you don't want the world to see. Actually you don't want anything (posts, pics, incriminating evidence of any sort no matter how small) online that you don't want the world to see no matter what you think your privacy settings are doing for you. You're in the professional world now. It's time to delete those party pics and realize that employers may look at your entire online profile and it's not tough to see shit you think is private. I'm not sure if some companies are still doing this or if it's legal but a couple of years ago some companies were asking for total access and pw's to social media accounts of prospective employees.
In your case, I'd accept the request. He's a former VP and it seems like you're entering more of a professional friendship with him. Clean up your social media footprint but unless you're committing acts of bestiality, it should be ok.
Unless you are a former BB CEO (or anyone else) who doesn't have to give a shit what others think, delete everything remotely incriminating or even in slightly poor taste related to your online profile. If I was in your position, I wouldn't even have a Facebook profile. No reward, all risk.
When in doubt, throw it out.
This is why I'm on facebook only under my dog's name.
EDIT: This message is a response to the OP, not the Dingdong08 reference to bestiality.
Just set your privacy to restrict posts older than like a year or six months or whatever and make sure you're clean for that time period.
In this day and age the line between professional and personal is pretty blurry. Friends can help you get jobs and coworkers can be part of your social life
Proceed accordingly OP...
