finding jobs advice (company)
how well do you need to know about a company if you want to get a job in there? I mean, you obviously will know the basic background of it, what does it do, what kind of jobs it provide, but how deep do I need to know? For instance, if I want to be a trader or do Asset Management, what should I know specifically?
You need to know enough to ask insightful questions. Unless they have less than no interest in you--and this happens--they will ask you if you have any questions for them. You need to be prepared enough to ask at least 3 insightful questions about the role and 3 about the company itself. You may not need the whole arsenal but you need to be prepared.
Years ago I was interviewing with a private equity firm--I believe it was called Perseus Capital/Perseus Realty Capital. I actually studied up on who Perseus was and the meaning. When I brought it up with the hiring manager he was basically like, "Huh? I don't know anything about the name. It's just a name--never thought about it." I felt like a real pill. Point is, you need a handful of relevant questions/topics to talk about but you don't need to learn the history of the company (unless it's relevant) or get buried in minutae.
