Follow up email after phone interview with head of department

Hi all,
I had a phone interview for a sales internship at BB yesterday with the head of the department. I don't think the interview went very well and I assume that I will not get an offer. This was probably the last round of interviews since I had several interviews last week with the rest of the team. Do you think I should send a thank-you email to the head of the department? He gave me his email adress over the telephone so I guess this might be a hint?
I usually don't do this and so far it had worked reasonably well at other european banks. This interview was for a US bank and I am not sure if there is a difference?
Thanks in advance!

Yes. Follow up. Even if the interview wasn't good. Being polite is never a bad thing.

Thanks for the answer! What does one usually write in such emails? Just "Thank you for the pleasant conversation, I hope to from you soon"? Or should I add anything?
