Freshman Summer

I'm a rising sophomore at a large non-target state university. I recently joined an investment club at school with great job placement and a few students going into IB. My GPA is about a 3.7 and I have experience in accounting (internship) and customer service. I know people say not to worry too much about freshman summer, but I feel that I should still do something that will help set me up for a boutique IB internship for Summer 2021. I live in a small town where there is hardly any opportunity for finance-related internships even without the whole Covid-19 situation, and while I was planning to do a small PWM internship, there is no hope left for that as most firms near me are not taking any interns or new hires in general. I was wondering if there is anything I could still do this late in May, or if I should just get a retail related job.

as a rising junior who got fucked this summer by COVID, honestly dude just chill out. There are even rising seniors I know who got fucked. Just take a summer class or do wall street prep if you want to be productive, but I highly doubt anyone is gunna look at the summer of the pandemic and shit on you for not having an internship, especially as a freshman where 75% of people don't do anything anyway under normal circumstances and still place in IB.

Do not listen to this. As someone in the same position as you but having an internship, I’m already networking for boutique IB SA 21. This internship has helped me stand out. I would urge you to find anything business related this summer

Gonna have to disagree. He's not wrong, I know of many people that did nothing even related to finance and have FT jobs in IB/S&T/ER. Dude already had the internship; it's not like OP can just easily find a business related internship in the next month. You definitely can but don't stress yourself out because people will understand. Just do something whether it be taking classes, brushing up on technicals, doing a personal project, getting a part time remote job/internship, etc...

While I think that you definitely CAN do it without an internship, it is much easier to network into soph SA roles with experience the previous summer.

Regardless, it’s not a huge deal OP. I’m just advocating to try your best and find something this summer. If not, do what everyone else is saying and prep or learn

See if you can find remote internships. Some smaller funds like college kids helping out with sourcing, decking, tracking/managing clients, etc
