What to do summer after freshman year if no internship
So summer is about to arrive and I emailed around 50 internships, got two interviews and no offers. I go to a southern semi-target, my GPA is subpar (3.4) and I have no extracurriculars to speak for because I was a lazy fuck first semester and second semester I was pledging for a fraternity and it took up so much of my time I had no time between that and classes to do anything.
I’m taking some summer classes to get my GPA to a 3.5+, but they are hardly going to take any time so I kinda want to do something else but given my position is there anything I can really do that could either make me a stronger candidate overall in the future or boost my resume?
My apologies if I sound like a super neurotic nerd, I’m just a little stressed since the reality of my mediocre first school year is really starting to hit me.
Take as many summer classes as you can. Freshman summer matters, but I did nothing and have been completely fine during recruiting (current sophomore). GPA is very important - above 3.5 is good, 3.6-3.7 is better, could be possible if you get a string of As this summer. If anyone asks what you did freshman year, saying "I took some extra classes to get ahead on my degree" checks the acceptable box.
I would look into a fall internship at local boutiques if you want some experience on your resume. Also, extracurriculars are important, check some out next year.
A 3.4 freshman year and no summer internships is hardly something you can't overcome. Your first priority should be to ace your summer courses so that you have as high a GPA as possible when it comes time for fall recruiting for next summer.
Operating under the assumption you want to break into IB, looking for off-cycle internships in the fall/spring isn't a bad idea but you'll also want to start focusing all your attention on getting a top-notch summer internship next year. This is going to make your life so much easier when you're looking for the final internship before senior year that should lead to a full-time offer. If I were you, I would spend your summer researching every resource your school has to offer to help you land in IB. This includes clubs, training courses, career resources, opportunities to get involved with career fairs, etc. Outside of that, I would spend your time familiarizing yourself with IB materials. Get a copy of Rosenbaum's Investment Banking book and read through it 2-3 times. Practice modeling. Go through WSO's IB Interview guide and go through practice problems. The earlier you start doing this stuff the easier your life is going to be. Again, your first priority should be acing all your summer classes.
I went on holiday after my first year, which was pretty cool
Freshman Summer Internship Rescinded; Best Plan of Action? (Originally Posted: 04/13/2018)
I had an internship lined up but it unfortunately got rescinded (not because of something I did).
I did not see this coming, so I didn't have other internships lined up. I now have nothing; I do have a 4.0 from a good school though if that helps. What's the best plan of action now?
Cold call/email boutiques/Small PE firms/VC firms and offer to work for free
Do I bring up that it would be for free in the initial email?
I would. It's already mid april and most of these small firms aren't going to have formal internship positions. You could try to get paid but unlikely at a small boutique when there's probably 50 other kids from your school cold calling them offering to work for free.
