From finance to project management
Hello folks, I am currently in real estate finance with less than one year of experience and looking for a way to get a solid foundation of the dirty and clean side of real estate early in my career.
I have two unrelated questions that I think may be interwoven given the context above:
(1)Can anyone shed some light on working as a project manager on a big firm big player on the construction side of real estate?
(2)How have professionals (experienced and novice) in real estate finance (banking, REPE, etc.) transitioned to a project management role without starting from the bottom of the totem pole? I am aware that if I want to learn construction, my compensation may have to take a haircut.
Thanks in advance.
Are you looking to get into project management full time or just learn the basics of the bricks and mortar?
This is more in relation to question 2; I'm on the investment side of things but in the last few months I've been involved with quite a bit of PM which in itself is OK. When it comes down to dealing with Construction Managers and Contractors, things can get a little bit overwhelming as I'd fall behind on quite a bit of the lingo and the different techniques involved in each contractors approach. While I do feel like I'm learning a substantial amount, I very rarely contribute anything valuable in terms of the way in which something is constructed apart from viability assessments on what sort of costs we are willing to incur.
Others may have different opinions or experiences but my perspective, if you want to master that side of the industry, would be to start from the start.
