Getting an interview

How have people who did not attend a targeted school land a job in Investment Banking? What tactics did you use to get on their radar? Were you able to leverage Alumni or family relations? Any ideas and stories would be appreciated.

My story -
Graduated in 2002 B.S. in Finance from small private school in TX. Did not have the flexibility to move at the time, and seek a job at a BB firm. No family in industry, no alums from University that I know of. Been a successful financial advisor for three years, looking for a challenge considering trying to get my foot in investment banking before I get any older(26) Looking for ideas? Thank you for your time. I appreciate the insights and knowledge that are shared in these forums.

Suppose for example that someone very high in a BB (think executive management) referred your unsolicited e-mail to the head of recruiting. What impact, if any, would this have on your job candidacy?
