Got a second round i-banking interview for HK summer program...

Basically, I secured a second round interview with a top i-banking firm in HK for its summer position. I am excited but have the following concerns that i hope you all could help me with.

  1. It's quite serious. When i got the 1st round interview, my gpa was actually 3.32, but i was certain that i would get 4.0 for the quarter so my gpa would be a 3.4 by the end of the quarter. That's what i put on my resume and i got and passed the 1st round interview. Now i did not get the projected grade and my gpa is actually only 3.34, should i send them an updated resume before the 2nd round (in 3 weeks)? I am really afraid that the bank would find me dishonest :(

  2. Does GPA still matter a lot in a 2nd round?

  3. any general advise for this interview?

about myself: engineering & econ double major from a top 15 school.

Please help and thanks so much!!!

I don't think you will get any backlash from such a small miscalculation. However on the other hand, you shouldn't really have included the GPA that you thought you would get in your initial submission.

Thanks Arcanne, and I have learned my lessons.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that i realized i had two spelling errors on my submitted resume, that really freaked me out and i am really glad that i even got an internview from the first place.

Should i send in an updated version to correct my gpa and the typos then?

thanks!

Hmm I think you need to send them an updated resume. If they check it later and it's not correct, you will be fired regardless of how small the mistake.

If they ask why your GPA is now lower when you send in the updated resume, you're going to need to have a really good story. I'm not sure what this will be, maybe something like you had an incomplete in one class (which doesn't count towards GPA, at least at my school), and you finished up the coursework and the incomplete has now converted into a C or something, thus lowering your cumulative GPA. This is assuming the bank doesn't have a copy of your unofficial transcript..if it does, you are screwed.

I would absolutely send them an updated resume. And don't ever lie again. That was just stupid. Since it's not a huge stretch you may be able to recover with a really good story.

I'd really like to sit here and be your moral compass but in all reality if you send them an updated resume and take pains to point out your mistakes and lies, the process will most likely be over for you right then and there.

Let's make this clear, the above posters have it correct: You shouldn't have lied (face it, that's what you did, you lied) about your GPA, and always make sure your resume is spotless.

But at this point just continue on with the process and hopefully you'll land the job. They most likely won't check your GPA until right before you begin your internship which should give you another semester to raise it back up to a 3.4, and on top of that I really don't think you'll be fired for listing a 3.4 and actually having a 3.34.

thanks for the reply guys and I have the following thoughts.

My intention was really not lying but i guess it seemed like it. THis is what i plan on doing and please tell me if it makes sense:

If it is really the case that they won't check my GPA until the intership starts, i'll have two quarters to raise my grade. What i plan on doing is to still send in an updated resume to correct my spelling mistakes (because i feel that they will be catched sooner or later therefore would have a negative impact of my interview) but leave the GPA part unchanged.

I really hate the trouble i'm running through right now and yes I've learned my lessons and thank you for all the support and understanding.

But by doing this i'm somewhat taking a risk, what do you all think?

Also, would GPA still play a big part during 2nd round??

Thank you so much, really!

In the same vein, although I have a much bigger problem.

I haven't landed anything yet, and I just submitted my resume w/ a 3.65 to a HK thing two days ago before I found out my C on a math final and B- on a final essay. Because I just finished my first quarter of my first year, this dropped my GPA down to a 3.35. Obviously, this is not good, but considering that I'm a first-year, I'm willing to forego an internship opportunity this year to make sure the people in HK don't think I'm a sleazy liar.

To the original poster -

I'm pretty sure that if they check your transcript, they're going to check to make sure you had a 3.4 AT THE TIME you submitted your resume to them - after completing your second semester of junior year but before completing your first semester of senior year. That is the check to verify if you told the trust. With your logic (i.e. raising your GPA to 3.4 by the end of your senior year), tons of IB analysts would be fired, since lots of peoples' GPAs drop by the second semester. So I had X.XX GPA when I interviewed in September and I put X.XX GPA on my resume, but I will have X.YZ GPA when I graduate (no way I will have the exact same GPA), so I'd be screwed then. I would have to strongly imagine that they confirm that you didn't lie about the grades you had AT THE TIME you interviewed, otherwise everyone could bump up their GPA like you did in anticipation of raising their GPA second semester.

Good luck. I think you need a better strategy.

Just to note though, I know 2 people who interned at two different banks in the US this past summer whose banks didn't check their official transcripts.
