Graduate CRE Salaries: London vs USA
Hi guys,
So I’m a recent university graduate working in cap markets at CBRE in London. Over here we’re called ‘Graduate Surveyors’ given we aim to qualify for RICS.
What I struggle to wrap my head around is the differences in salaries at CBRE and the CRE industry at large when comparing graduates in the UK to the USA, particularly those in New York.
I’m on £27k, whereas I heard first year analysts at CBRE in New York make between $50-$60k. I understand in the US you have to pay for healthcare and have more college debt, but why are the salaries so different?
Makes me want to move to the States!
Well IB here is GBP50k vs USD85k, so pretty much the same.
Generally speaking in the States the work/life balance is much poorer than in the UK and you will find that in the Real Estate sector (and many others) it is highly competitive and whilst you will likely be paid significantly more in the US than here, you will work much longer hours with far less annual leave. I suppose you also have to consider the exchange rate between the GBP and USD is pretty awful at the moment so that factors into it. On the whole the two countries are just very different beasts!
