Hedge Fund Operating in India

Background: Graduated college in 08 and work for an accounting firm in their Asset Management practice.

An opportunity has recently presented itself for me to go out to Bangalore, India for 6-18 months (I'm trying to go for the shorter end of this). Part of my responsibility would be to be a liaison b/w our financial services office and our India office. It would give me a great opportunity to help shape our practice and have an impact on the whole process. It would give a tremendous experience in teaching and mentoring that would be harder to obtain in the states at my current level.

I'm pretty set on taking this opportunity. My question is (to those of you with experience) what the hedge fund landscape is in India. Being such a young economy, I'm guessing it is all very primitive. What about the future? Is there a future for India in the asset management field or is it destined to be a location for back office operations?

I'm trying to get an idea of how this can shape my career outside of my current firm if/when I decide to move on.

Any experience or references would be appreciated. Thanks.

Look indians started hedge funds over here, did rather well, so why not back there? Take it, it's not like you're there forever. You'll probably get bored of the country in like 2 seconds, but it can't hurt.

Assamese,

I'd be interested in talking more about some of these funds. I know I have worked on several funds who have started subsidiaries in Mauritius in order to gain investment opportunities into the Indian market.

PM me and we can talk further

I ran a screen on Capital IQ.. I found over 4,000 hedge funds globally and surprisingly only 2 in India: -De Shaw Composite Investments (Mauritius) Ltd. -Alpine Assets Appreciation Fund Limited There must be more though.. just Google it
