i would narrow it down to at least a 13.3 or bigger, so that eliminates one
Dropping this comment so I remember this post later. I'll come back once I've had time to look at them. I'm shopping for a new computer as well and entirely forgot to consider Lenovo. I had a W series a few years ago; traded it for a Macbook Pro (2014 when they were still good), but it was entirely a beast while I had it. It came down to a great deal on a MBP with similar specs.
Dell XPS
Ended up getting an L380 13.3'' Intel Core i5-8250U MB 128GB SSD M.2 2280 SATA3 16GB DDR4 2400 SoDIMM $650 shipped
Ordered a 24'' monitor too. Should be a good setup
What are you using it for? I'm looking for a deal on a machine that can handle deep learning data sets (high RAM, Pascal GPU), is cheap, and is somewhat future-proof. As you can imagine, zero luck. I'm looking into desktops but the GPU becomes difficult, as most sub-$1000 machines won't have a dedicated spot for the GPU.
I'm just using it for everyday shit. My current laptop has 8 gigs RAM and works fine. Sounds like you have some high power requirements.
Starting a masters in analytics in the spring. Not positive on how computing intensive the curriculum will truly be, but I want something that will perform well sub $1,500. Giving the lenovo T480s a hard look right now -- 8th gen intel core, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD at about $1,200 after discount.
Here's a tip: you can get a refurbished Dell XPS 13 on Amazon for ~$900 with 16GB RAM and an i7. Unless your masters is heavy on machine learning, I think a machine like that is exactly what you need. You can grab a Google or Amazon cloud cluster if you need GPU compute. The Lenovo is good, but I'm not a fan of the design and weight.
A little late to answer but I have the l380 and like it quite a lot. Would definitely recommend.
Stop being such a stingy fuck and just drop one grand on a laptop. It's an investment, and once you go for an high-end laptop, you can't go back.
HP Spectre X360, Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, Dell XPS 13/15, Ideapad 330s, etc. Maybe even Mac if you want to look cool at starbucks (/s)
I have a Lenovo Yoga 920 - its pretty good. I like it. It has taken a beating as well. I have insurance on it, but it has held up well.
