HELP!!! ... REALLY!!!
Ok... here is the story... My GF is a third year looking for summer in Finance (IBD, S&T etc. ) She is sincere about the job and is not in it for the money... really! So she went through the school recruiting... her average is not too high so no dice there. she contact tons of alumni and cold call almost every firm on bay street(toronto). So after all of that she was like 90% in to a really good position. they called and says she was the strongest candidate but the market is yuk so the position is cancelled. keep her file for ...blah blah blah. So at this point we are a bit numb to what to do next! So if market is down, there is no more summer? how much does it actually cost/save the firm to hire summer anyways! She is thinking volunteering just to gain the experience since as said before she doesn't care about the money! HELP! any advice!
If she's sincere...why doesn't she ask the question here?

An essay could be written on what to do at this point and what chances are stood. I think you would be better off using the search function on this site though. If what you say is true, it seems there is little doubt that she is motivated to break into the industry. However, as with countless other prospective monkeys, it seems as though she is not fully aware of the appropriate steps needed to do so successfully.
Here's how to bridge the information gap. Have HER (not you) read every single post and every single piece of information. That'll bring her up to speed on what banks are looking for (whether it's too late to correct anything is another issue). Then have her look to this site and search for WTF to do when recruiting season is over and still no offer.
Market has little to do with it -- strong candidates will get offers regardless of the market environment. To big banks, the cost of an intern is of little concern, if any at all. Unfortunately, like you claim of your GF, they're not in it for the money either =P. Smaller boutique banks may feel the cost of an intern more but at the same time are more open to "volunteers." Even their volunteers usually have to go through a typical banking interview process though and must be qualified in some way - It's not like volunteering at the local soup kitchen... usually.

It is definately tough. I know BMO took on 8 for IB, TD 4, and I think Scotia took 2 or 3. Personally, I think it is best for your girlfriend to focus her energy on trying to volunteer with boutiques. I tried the volunteer approach 2 years ago, but no avail.
