I am having an issue finding housing in NYC and was hoping for some advice for my fellow monkeys. Here is the basic issue:
I start training for my FT associate role at the end of August, but my wife is not planning on moving to NYC until sometime in the early spring (mid-March, most likely). What I have been looking for is a cheap, short term solution for this time period. Since I will be at my desk for the vast majority of my waking hours, all I need is somewhere to sleep and shower. I would be willing to live in all NYC boroughs other than SI, but proximity to midtown and a lack of crack dealers and gunfire would be a plus.
I tried craigslist but it seems everything is either a scammer trying to get me to wire money for an 'application feel' or something like that or they require a twelve month lease.
Does anyone know of any resources that would help solve my problem?
Look under the short term stay and sublet section of craigslist. And also there are hardly any crack dealers or gunfire in Manhattan anymore unless you live in the projects.
I have been looking there and it seems filled with scammers, like the ones I mentioned above.
Also, if anyone on the site has a room available or knows someone who is looking for a renter or subletter like me I would highly appreciate the help. While mid-March is optimal, I can stretch/compress the dates as necessary if it is a really good deal.
On another topic, where would most of you say the maximum distance into the 100s you would live in Manhatten? Remember, this is for a white male banker who will have a car service to take him home at night (i.e. getting mugged/shot walking to or from the subway is not a huge concern).
^You really don't want to live that far from the office.
When you get into the 100's, you're talking about a 25-30 train ride in the morning + possible transfer + walking.
And to put this in context, this would be after getting home at 4am.
Edit: Also, most of those trains do not run as frequently as some of the bigger lines.
Is that really too far? I have found some rooms to share/sublet on CL near Columbia U (most of them are grad students) for $750-800ish, which is about what I am looking to pay.
My office is basically right next to Times Square, so transfers and walking will be minimal. It seems once you look closer than north of 110th, Williamsburg, Astoria prices seem to blow up.

Try long island city / shallow Queens area. Close to Manhattan and cheaper rents.
$750-800 is a very low budget though.
Try looking into Southern Weehawken or Union City / Northern Hoboken.
Less expensive than the city and you can take a bus right to port authority (next to times square). Might even be able to take a ferry via NY Waterways.
Obviously not ideal, but you might even be able to get a one bedroom in Weehawken for what you're looking to pay. Commute won't be bad off peak hours.

Yeah, I was under no illusion that I might find something like that in Mnhtn. Astoria seems pretty workable on that budget, though. I am headed to town right now in order to spend the weekend looking.
Any advice that anyone has would be great.
