How do I get out of origination?

Hi guys,

I would very much appreciate your input here, particularly those of you who have made the jump from similar backgrounds. I'm currently doing origination for a industry focused private equity. It is pure BD, and the experience is limited to that with some minor but basic understanding of companies. I get to see a model, but someone else does the modelling. Granted, it's fairly plug and play, however I did an undergrad in finance at a top school, and have completed financial modelling courses, and now it feels like I've wasted that knowledge.

Has anyone here moved away from a sales oriented/origination focused role and moved into roles where you actually do get a chance to use your brain every so often? Feedback and advice much appreciated.

FWIW, I am fairly good at origination.
