How Does one get recruited for "early recruiting" "advanced early recruiting"

I have seen a lot of posts on here about getting invited to "early recruiting" "advanced early recruiting" and even heard of some students from my semi-target school interviewing and landing offers for next summer as early as April of this year. How does this happen? Do you need to have connections, apply for early engagement events, previously intern with the firm? On our school's career portal regular resume drops don't open for at least another month at the earliest.

Most of these early engagement and recruiting events are related to diversity recruitment. Sometimes non-diverse applicants will apply anyway and still get in, especially if they have networked before or have connections. I wouldn't worry about it since the bulk of recruiting will occur during the regular season.
